If you have ever been involved in the dairy farming business, you have probably heard about World Dairy Expo which is held in Madison, Wisconsin every year. It’s where elite dairy cows bring their farm families to compete for tops in their breed and even top cow over ALL breeds! (This year’s Supreme Champion, Delilah, is a gorgeous Brown Swiss Cow who defended her championship from last year)!
As my hubby, Steve, always says, “Timing is Everything”, and our first trip as exhibitors at World Dairy Expo was no exception. We made a call early last summer to the Expo staff to inquire about becoming a vendor, and as luck (and good timing) would have it, their previous fudge vendor had just decided to opt out of doing the show, so they had an opening! Of course, we had to submit an application along with pictures, etc., and pay a pretty hefty fee to participate, but we decided to go for it- and we are SO glad that we did!
Our first experience at World Dairy Expo was A-MAZ-ING! We shared samples of our fudge with thousands of wonderful farm folks young and old, chatting with many of them, and making new friends throughout the week with other vendors and visitors to the show. (People from all over the world visit World Dairy Expo every year.)
The first day of the show is designated as “FFA Day” (Future Famers of America). We were advised to be ready to hand out LOTS of samples that day, and right on schedule at 9:05 a.m., the kids started lining up for tasting! It kept three of us hopping all morning to keep up, but what a FUN time we had! These young people were polite, respectful and very engaged in all the farm-related activities going on. Not once did I notice anybody staring at a cell phone! It was a great start to the week!
In other exciting news from our week at Expo, we welcomed some very distinguished visitors to our booth! On Wednesday morning I noticed a big group of people and lots of cameras over at the Dairy Famers of Wisconsin booth. Secretary of Agriculture, Sonny Perdue was walking toward our booth! We had a nice conversation while the cameras clicked away. He thought that our Peanut Butter Chocolate Fudge was the perfect combination of Wisconsin Butter and Georgia Peanuts! I couldn’t agree more!
Then, on Thursday afternoon, who should stop by but Wisconsin Governor, Tony Evers! He declared our Chocolate Fudge, “Primo”!
Friday morning brought Alice in Dairyland! Our Alice is beautiful and delightful to talk to. I was excited to get my picture taken with her, and she signed her special postcard with a personal note to us!
And last but not least, to add sweetness to ALL of these cool encounters…. We won an award for our cheery red and white booth! Even though preparation and planning to exhibit at World Dairy Expo was a BIG job, being there and sharing our love of all things dairy with the people who make a difference in this industry day in and day out made it worth every bit and SO much more.
See you next year at World Dairy Expo 2020!
